Valeria Hernandez

Windsor High, Class of 2026 | University of Northern Colorado

For Valeria Hernandez, the journey to college began long before she stepped onto an American campus. Originally from Venezuela, Valeria moved to the United States just two years ago in search of greater opportunity and the chance to pursue higher education. Coming from a low-income family where neither of her parents had the opportunity to attend college—or even finish high school—Valeria understood early that earning a degree would require determination, resilience, and hard work.

When Valeria arrived in the United States, she spoke no English. Adapting to a new country, culture, language, and school system was overwhelming at times, but she refused to let those challenges define her future. Instead, she embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and become involved in her new community. Through activities such as tennis, swimming, FCA Club, and Interact Club, Valeria not only improved her English skills but also gained confidence, built friendships, and found a greater sense of belonging.

Throughout her journey, Valeria was encouraged by people who believed in her potential and challenged her to pursue goals that once felt out of reach. Their support helped her navigate the complexities of a new education system while building the skills and confidence she needed to succeed. Today, Valeria stands as a proud graduate of Windsor High School, earning Cum Laude honors and securing acceptance to the University of Northern Colorado.

At UNC, Valeria plans to study Business or Business Administration. As a first-generation college student and immigrant, she understands the opportunities higher education can create—not only for herself, but also for her family’s future. As she prepares for college, access to a reliable computer will be essential to her success, helping her complete assignments, conduct research, stay organized, and fully participate in her coursework. Support from Collegiate Crossings helps ensure students like Valeria have the resources they need to thrive in college and beyond.

Looking ahead, Valeria is excited to begin the next chapter of her life at the University of Northern Colorado. Her story is a powerful reminder that courage, perseverance, and the support of a caring community can transform challenges into opportunities. With determination and a clear vision for her future, Valeria is well on her way to achieving her dreams and creating new possibilities for generations to come.
